Project: Knowledge Archeology from Homebrew Data Sources: Integrating Informal Information Sources Into the KG

Description

Background
Marel, a global leader in the food processing industry, specializes in designing and manufacturing advanced machinery for processing poultry, meat, and fish. Effective knowledge sharing among engineers at Marel is important for sustaining business operations.

Description
“Homebrew” systems are fragmented knowledge artifacts such as spreadsheets, ad-hoc databases, internal documents occuring in a local setting out of reach for search and an organization’s formal knowledge infrastructure. They emerge organically to address immediate needs from a personal desire or within teams , yet remain invisible to colleagues who could benefit from information in it. As a result, employees may either struggle to locate critical information or remain unaware of its existence altogether. This project investigates how information in “homebrew” systems can be systematically uncovered and integrated into Marel’s Knowledge Graph (MarelKG).

Recently expert interviews have been held at Marel (available as transcripts and recordings). This project will analyze how employees create, reference, and interact with these informal knowledge sources. Inspired by principles of “data archaeology”, the goal is to design a methodology for identifying these hidden systems, assessing their structure and relevance, and linking them to appropriate entities in MarelKG.

The outcome will be an enhanced Marel Knowledge Graph that bridges the gap between formal and informal knowledge systems, reducing information silos and supporting more effective knowledge reuse across the organization.
